Baptisms & Christenings

A Christening is the first step of an amazing journey with God, parents, godparents, friends, family and the church. As part of the Church of England, the Abbey welcomes babies, children, families of any kind - and people of any age can be christened, too.

Baptism is a great way to introduce you or your child to the Church and a religious way of life. Baptisms can take place at any time in someone’s life and is truly a highlight of our duties as a church.

As the Parish Church for Hexham, any and everyone is welcome to hold a baptism with us.

There are 2 types of baptism ceremony that can be held at the Abbey. The most frequently used format is held at 12.30pm on a Sunday where you will have exclusive use of the Abbey and the service is dedicated entirely to the baptism. If you or your family are a regular worshipper at the Abbey, you may prefer the baptism to be held as part of the 10am Eucharist service on a Sunday morning where the baptism will happen during the service, giving the wider congregation a chance to celebrate with you.

During the baptism, your child will be baptised with water in the Abbey’s historic font, dating back to Roman times. Everyone baptised here becomes part of the Abbey community and is welcomed into the Abbey family.

Preparation for a baptism can begin by having a read through of our Baptism Booklet which contains information about holding a baptism at Hexham Abbey as well as the significance of baptism as a service. Once you have had a read through, please send an email, call or pop in to the Parish Office and we will reserve and a date can be booked into the Abbey diary for you. Closer to the date of your baptism ceremony, you will be invited to a prep session, where the clergy will run through the service with the child to be baptised, parents and godparents.

Baptism is for everyone and you must never feel you are too old to be baptised, we welcome adult or teenage baptism as much as younger children and babies and are happy to discuss the service with you, please just send us a message.

There is no charge to hold a baptism at Hexham Abbey, however, donations are always welcomed.

We can also offer room hire to host a baptism reception following the ceremony if you require one, we have a selction of rooms available, more details of which can be found here.
