IGNITE - Festival of Flame

Discover what the Abbey looks like when illuminated by candlelight

Be delighted, inspired, moved and warmed on the 29th of November at the ignition of a Festival of Flame. Slip in by the main door of the Abbey opposite the marketplace and be transported into a space of darkness and light, beautiful sounds and peaceful murmurs.

Come and discover what the Abbey looks like when illuminated only by candlelight, witness hundreds of tealights burning in the design of four interlaced triquetra, enjoy an atmospheric soundtrack interspersed with bite-sized live performances of Bach, witness artist Helen Clark's colourful specially commissioned large-scale work and poet Stan Beckensall's specially commissioned poetry capturing the essence of the occasion.

Once outside you'll find a Viking-inspired fire garden, a dazzling pear tree illuminated with thousands of points of light, hot food and drink from the Refectory plus toasted marshmallows, braziers and Fire & Dough pizzas in the car park.

Oh, and be sure to drop in to Queen's Hall, where they will be preparing for a Viking Christmas...

All are welcome, old and young from near and far...
