Scaffolding

A ladder to history!

A complex programme of scaffolding has been designed to enable the heritage stonemasons access to the areas of the Abbey that require their attention.  This is certainly not your standard scaffolding job!

The scaffolding has been errected to the north elevation of the Nave, taking over two weeks to complete.  Once the stonemasons have completed their works at the higher levels the top section of the scaffold will be brought down and the scaffolding team will begin phase two - errecting a scaffold to the West elevation of the Nave.  This will unavoidably make the West Door (from the rear car-park) inaccessible during the construction phase.

Once we got up there, the need for the works was very evident!  Lots of open joints between the stones where the mortar has simply been washed away over the years...helped along by high altitude weeds!
