Volunteering

Every year, Hexham Abbey welcomes over 100,000 visitors. We work hard to ensure that each one of them has an enjoyable time here, and our committed team of volunteers is vital to that effort. If you have some spare time, perhaps you’d like to join us?

Volunteering at Hexham Abbey is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, and need people with a variety of skills to undertake different roles. We also support our volunteers with training opportunities, helping them to do the best job possible and keep their skills up to date.

We have volunteering opportunities for everyone. Here are some examples:

  • If you are outgoing and enjoy meeting people, perhaps you’d like to be a Steward. Our Stewards are there to welcome visitors to the Abbey when they first arrive, and to introduce them to our range of guide books and audio guides.
  • Do you enjoy history and communicating your knowledge and enthusiasm to others? Why not consider becoming a Guide, showing groups around our glorious building?
  • The Abbey Gift Shop is also run by volunteers. If you have retail experience and good people skills, this could be ideal for you.
  • Do you have a background in education? Do you enjoy dressing up and getting messy? You could be perfect for helping out with school visits. (Enhanced DBS required)
