At Hexham Abbey we have a vision of a world where God’s love is enjoyed, celebrated and shared. It is our mission to be an open community of Christ’s disciples, sharing our worship, engaging our faith with the world, and offering our lives to serve God’s kingdom.
Hexham Abbey is an inclusive, thriving church with regular services, several choirs, a great musical tradition and many parish groups that meet regularly and encourage each other on an adventure of faith.
Set in the centre of the historic market town of Hexham, we welcome pilgrims and visitors who are planning to spend time in this place where faith has been celebrated for more than 1,350 years. Whether a local or a visitor, you will feel inspired by the sense of heritage, worship and community unique to this beautiful place. We welcome you to explore, experience, and enjoy!
Amazing free attraction in Hexham, small fee to see the Roman Crypt but well worth paying, especially as a volunteer goes down with you and fully explains everything and points out important things to note. The volunteers were very kind and friendly, answering all our questions and just seemed happy to be talking about something they care about. It was very calm and quiet inside, with lots of educational boards around and artefacts
An absolutely beautiful abbey, so very rich in history. A wonderful atmosphere here! The lady watching over the steps down to the crypt, was really pleasant and very informative too. There is a £3.00 for adults to go down into the crypt (not for the storage of bodies, but for treasures!) But it's interesting to have a look nonetheless, as back when the original church was first built between 672 - 674, both it and the crypt were made all with Roman stone from Corbridge. It doesn't take too long to look around but still, it's a lovely place to visit nonetheless, especially for the historical aspect. And then, of course, there's also the town of Hexham, with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy afterwards!
A beautiful building with lots of history and hidden features. Free to get in and take photos. Guide books available and a nice gift shop to have a look in. Some stunning stained glass and Roman and Saxon features.
