A Matter of Life and Death is a British fantasy‑romantic drama in which Peter Carter, an RAF pilot, miraculously survives jumping from his burning aircraft without a parachute after a WWII bombing mission. Before leaping, he makes radio contact with June, an American operator, and the two form an immediate emotional connection.

Peter awakens on a beach believing he may be dead—until real‑world signs prove otherwise. He soon meets June in person, and the pair fall deeply in love. But a mistake has occurred in the afterlife: a celestial Conductor sent to escort Peter “missed” him in the thick fog and now insists that Peter must report to the next world. Peter refuses, arguing that he has fallen in love and deserves a second chance at life.

This dispute leads to a celestial trial, where heavenly authorities debate whether Peter should live or die. The film interweaves the earthly love story with a grand, visually imaginative Other World, contrasting vivid Technicolor scenes on Earth with striking monochrome sequences in the afterlife. It blends romance, fantasy, philosophy, and wartime themes—exploring fate, justice, and the power of human connection.

Widely admired for its originality and artistic ambition, the film is considered one of the great achievements of Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, ranking highly in major lists of the best British films.
