Hexham Abbey Film Club – Paddington

Paddington is a warm‑hearted family comedy about a polite young bear from Darkest Peru who travels to London in search of a new home. After an earthquake destroys his home, his Aunt Lucy sends him to the city promised to be welcoming to bears. When he arrives—lost, hopeful, and wearing a label that reads “Please look after this bear. Thank you.”—he is taken in by the kindly Brown family, who name him Paddington after the station where they found him.
As Paddington tries to adapt to city life, he unintentionally causes a series of funny mishaps—from flooding the Browns’ bathroom to misunderstandings with Londoners—yet his good manners and big heart slowly win the family over. Meanwhile, an ominous threat emerges: Millicent Clyde, a determined taxidermist who wants to capture Paddington for her collection, adding suspense and adventure to his journey.
The film blends gentle humour, touching themes about belonging and family, and a charming immigrant‑story metaphor—earning widespread critical acclaim. It stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington, alongside Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Nicole Kidman.
