Enjoy a heart‑warming afternoon at our Film Club, held on the first Thursday of every month. Join us from 1.30pm in Hexham Abbey Priory Buildings, above the Refectory Café, for a friendly welcome before our 2.00pm screening of a feel‑good modern favourite or a much‑loved classic. It’s a relaxed, cheerful space to unwind, meet others, and enjoy the magic of cinema together. Free entry, with refreshments provided — everyone is warmly invited.

Sister Act is a musical comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who witnesses her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. To keep her safe, the police hide her in the least likely place imaginable: a struggling convent in San Francisco, where she must pose as Sister Mary Clarence.

At first, Deloris clashes hilariously with the strict Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) and struggles to adapt to convent life. But she soon finds her place—revitalising the convent’s poorly performing choir with her musical talent. Under her lively direction, the nuns transform into a joyful, soulful ensemble that begins to draw crowds and revive the local community.

However, their growing fame threatens Deloris’s cover, drawing attention from the criminals searching for her. What follows is a warm, funny, and music‑filled adventure about unexpected sisterhood, personal growth, and the power of community.

The film was a huge commercial success and went on to inspire a sequel and a hit stage musical.
