The Bitter Landscapes of Palestine

August 13, 2025 - August 21, 2025

The pictures depict the landscapes and the lives of Bedouin herders in Masafer Yatta and the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank of Palestine, and the interactions of these herders with Israeli soldiers.

By Margaret Olin and David Shulman.

Margaret Olin is senior lecturer emeritus at Yale University, as well as author of Touching Photographs, and the curator of Shaping Community: Poetics and Politics of the Eruv. Her current work centres on the visual culture of the occupation in Israel and Palestine.

David Shulman is a professor emeritus at the Hebrew University. The author of Tamil, More Than Real, Dark Hope and Freedom and Despair: Notes from the South Hebron Hills, he is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the ongoing conflict. We especially lift up to God the Israeli hostages and Palestinian civilians, praying for their safety, peace, reconciliation, and healing.

May compassion and justice prevail.
