Hexham Orpheus Choir

Performing Dame Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D and Brahms Schicksalslied

Hexham Orpheus Choir will be performing Dame Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D and Brahms Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) in Hexham Abbey on Saturday 17th May at 7:30pm

Our Musical Director, Mark Edwards will be joined by full orchestra and soloists.

Dame Ethel Smyth started work on this mass in 1889, completing it in 1891, with the first performance in the Royal Albert Hall in 1893. However, it didn’t attract the attention it deserved mainly due to a patronising attitude of reviewers towards a female composer. We are really looking forward to singing this wonderful, albeit rather lesser-known, work.

Brahms completed work on Schicksalslied in May 1871 with the first performance in October 1871 in Karlsruhe.
