There had been a “Service of Thanksgiving in Hexham Abbey, on Tuesday May 21st 1901, on the occasion of the safe return from South Africa of the Hexham Volunteers from the Boer War.” [Hex.Par.Mag. Jun 1901 p.51–54]
“Names of Hexham Volunteers who have served in South Africa …” includes only 24 of the above 48 names. [ibid. p.53] Presumably more served until 1902, including some who died.
Previously (from 1905) at S end of E wall of bay 2 which is now St Etheldreda's chapel. Later (date unknown, possibly 1947 when St Etheldreda's Chapel was restored) moved to bay 1.
“A letter from Mr A Emerson with respect to a Faculty for, and the position of, a brass Tablet of Honour to the Volunteers who had served in the South African war, was read and the Secretary was asked to communicate with Mr Emerson.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 14/03/1905]
Unveiled Sunday morning, 3rd September 1905 by Colonel Lockhart V.D. at a church parade of the 1st Vol. Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.
