The Revd Peter Rumney of Hexham.
who died on 16th February 1771, aged 56, and
Elizabeth his wife, who died 7th November 1795, aged 79.
Their grateful and devoted offspring
erected this monument 1796.

1823: “An oval slab of white marble— … Succession of Masters: Peter Rumney. Perpetual curate of Hexham. He died in 1771. A monument erected to his memory by the pious gratitude of his children, is extant in the church. [History of Hexham, A.B. Wright, 1823, p.98 & p.230]
8. PETER RUMNEY, M.A., appointed 1765; died 1771; was of Kirby Hill, Yorkshire; born in 1715; graduated M.A. at Cambridge (?) (certainly not at Oxford); was Headmaster of Hexham Grammar School, 1765–1771; Perpetual Curate of Hexham, 1765–1771; died at Hexham, 16th February, 1771, aged 56 years, and was buried in the Choir of Hexham Church; his wife Elizabeth, died 7th November, 1795, aged 56 years; a Monument was erected to their memory by the pious gratitude of their children in 1796, and is now laid to the south wall of the Choir. A sermon preached after the Hexham Riot in 1761, and published anonymously, is supposed to be by Revd P. Rumney. [J.W.Fawcett, Parish Magazine Oct 1903, p.77]

“In the choir is a monument to the memory of the Rev. Peter Rumney, of Hexham; one to Caleb Rotheram, D.D.; and another, with a Latin inscription, inscribed to John Rotheram, M.D.” [Mackenzie, Northumberland, vol.II, 1825 p.281]
