At the east end of the church:
Here lies buried Dorothy Surtees, the wife of Cuthbert Surtees of Newbiggin, who died Feb. 15th, 1751, aged 49 years.
Here lies buried Cuthbert Surtees of Newbiggin, who died Dec. 10th, 1759, aged 52 years.
Also Elizabeth Wilson of Newbiggin, who died 12th July, 1803, aged 36 years.
Anthony Surtees, esq., of Newbiggin, son of the above-named Cuthbert and Dorothy, and many years major of the Northumberland Militia, who died 20th July, 1803, aged 60 years.
Also Jane Wilson, niece of the above-named Anthony Surtees, esq., who died June 23rd, 1826, aged 57 years.
Also Leonard Wilson, esq., of Newbiggin, who was buried Dec. 7th, 1839, aged 70 years.
Also Dorothy Atkinson of Newbiggin, who was buried Sept. 9th, 1840, aged 78 years.
John Atkinson, esq., of Newbiggin, buried Dec. 31st, 1844, aged 76 years.
Also Emma Atkinson, youngest daughter of John Atkinson, esq., of Newbiggin, who died May 5th, aged 3 months.
1751–1844
1823: “In the old school and in other parts of the church are upright stones inserted in the ground, like the usual headstones in a churchyard, but these have little or no claim to notice. On one we find … four of the name of Surtees of Newbiggin, from 1751 to 1803.” [A B Wright, 1823 p.95]
Mentioned in A B Hinds' 1896 “A History of Northumberland” volume 3, p200, but not since.
1940: [Possibly irrelevant Faculty] “On the 22nd day of October 1940 … 2. To remove the iron railings round the Atkinson family tomb at the East end of the said Abbey.” [Faculty Regr. no.1, p.137. Faculty no.1483. NRO EP.184/80]
