Lockable oak display case with lifting glazed lid. Built especially to contain the Breeches Bible.
Mr Jewitt
Hedley, 3 St Mary's Chare
1950s–1994
Pre-2014 used to display the Breeches Bible [HEXAB5229] which is now housed in one of the new display cases at the east end of the Nave north aisle.
1954: Presented by The Friends of Hexham Abbey and originally mounted vertically with hinges at the top, supported on brackets fixed to the north wall near the east end of the Nave north aisle.
The Bible was subject to repair and restoration in 1994 and it was then recommended [HEXAB9298.1.5] that the case should be horizontal rather than vertical, and free-standing on new legs away from the wall. Also: “FUMIGATION: Because the Bible as been affected and stained by damp, the existing case should be thoroughly fumigated before re-use. SEALING: The acid in the oak should be prevented from moving into the paper by sealing the wood with two or three coats of polyurethane varnish.”
1994: “Breeches Bible … case remade to hold it horizontally.” [Churchwardens Record HEXAB9535 p70]
In 2014 it was thought that the recommended sealing may not have provided adequate protection, and the Bible was transferred to a modern display case.
