Three-light window with cinquefoil heads and 13 tracery lights.
“The Baptism of King Ethelbert” and “Northumbrian Children”. See Bosdet DVD [HEXAB9262].
The Baptistery Window. The subjects refer to the influence of childhood upon the Conversion of Anglo-Saxon Britains to the Christian Faith.

of Hexham who died 27th March A.D. 1891 aged | 61 years. And his Wife Sarah Mainwaring Phyllis | Furnivall who died 27th June A.D. 1905 aged 76 years.

Dedicated Saturday, August 8th 1908 by the Bishop of Bristol at the consecration and dedication of the nave.
1908. At the Window. The window will be unveiled by Miss S. A. Fairless. The Rector shall say: “Right Reverend Father in God, On behalf of Sarah Alice Fairless, the Donor of this Window, and in loving memory of her father, James Liddle Fairless, I present this window, In the Name of the All-Holy and Ever-Blessed Trinity, to the Glory of God, and the beautifying of this His Holy Church.” The Bishop of Bristol then blessed and hallowed the window. “Mr Knell seconded the proposal put by Mr Mason that he should get estimates for the fitting of wire guards for the 3 stained-glass windows in the Nave. This was agreed.” [PCC Min. 2/11/1971 p.85]
Repair to be done [Property Cttee. minutes 6 Dec. 1991]. Repaired by 20 Jan. 1992.
South light broken at base and north light broken near middle by intruders who broke through it. Repaired 17 Nov. 1994. [Property Cttee. minutes 17 Nov. 1994; Abbey Chronicle Dec. 1994.]
1996: Protected with 6 mm polycarbonate by B & R Glazing Co Ltd in June 1996 [Faculty reg. no.4, Faculty no 4762, granted 26 Jan. 1996]
2011/2012: All the polycarbonate protection was removed and wire guards fitted by H&R Developments, Caulkerbush, Dumfries in Oct–Nov 2011 and Jan 2012. [Faculty dated 26 July 2011]

The 13 tracery panels are filled with Cherubim and Seraphim in praise. It is believed that images of Canon Savage's children were used.

Shows the triumph of Gregory's enterprise and St Augustine's efforts in the baptism of Ethelbert by St Augustine in the presence of Queen Bertha and the whole Saxon Court [the king stands in the font whilst Augustine baptizes him by affusion – pouring water over his head three times]. The background represents a view outside the main gate of the Saxon town of Canterbury.

Gregory the Great, whose attention is attracted by the beauty of a group of Northumbrian (Deiran) children in the slave-market at Rome. He questions the slave dealer, their owner, as to the country of their origin, and is thus led to determine upon the evangelization of England. In the background is a view of Rome.
Inscription: Gregory the Great and the Northumbrian Children in the Slave market at Rome. [The face of the child in green facing outwards is a likeness of the Rector's daughter Awdrey Victoria Savage (later Mrs Beckingham), born March 1901]

Saint Augustine, the Missionary sent by Gregory to the Court of Ethelbert, the pagan king of Kent. He is assisting at the prayers of Bertha, Ethelbert's Queen and a Christian Princess; for the Conversion of her husband. The background represents the interior of St Martin's Church, Canterbury.
Inscription: Queen Bertha praying for the Conversion of King Ethelbert.
