Canon Savage wanted to create a memorial to his son in the Abbey and outlined his vision for a side chapel, set aside for prayer and meditation. But his plans proved controversial and were rejected which caused hurt on both sides.
It took 19 years for agreement to be reached about a suitable memorial. Money for furnishing the chapel was donated by various people and the names of 247 men who died were listed in the Roll of Honour.
“Permanent War Memorial in the Abbey. The Rector referred to the conversation between the Church wardens and the British Legion on this subject, and said he proposed, with the Church wardens, to meet a representative committee of the Legion and discuss the possibility of placing a permanent War Memorial in the Abbey.” [PCC Min. 27/05/1930 p49]
