Bell from Lowgate
bell | metalwork
iron
5 pieces – ringing arm (+S rope) ring pivot, bell, clanger. No obvious markings.
The bell was hung from a rudimentary headstock with a hole in it through which the bar that is cast in to the crown of the bell passes. The top of the clapper is hook-shaped and is fastened to what appears to be a cast-in crown staple in the form of a loop. The clapper is make-shift and sharp edges have damaged the bell – but it would not be needed if the bell is to be chimed. [Neville Parkin, Hexham Abbey Steeple Keeper, 15/2/2007].
Llewellin and James of Bristol
c1897
Originally hung in St Mary Lowgate church in 1897, and brought to the Abbey after the church was closed (25/05/2003).
2022: Faculty application No.2022-075271 dated 16/09/2022 applied for permission for [inter alia] “The sale and relocation of the Lowgate Chapel bell …”. This was granted and the bell was removed from the Abbey.
