WOODEN BOX WITH MEDAL IN TOP Set into the top of this box of turned oak is a medal with a view of the Abbey Church from the south west (before the nave was rebuilt). It is inscribed at the top ‘HEXHAM CHURCH BUILT BY WILFRID, AD 674.’ and below ‘M. Smith HEXHAM 1830’. This is one of three similar boxes in the Abbey collection all with different names, the latest dating from 1842. It is not known whether these were made as prizes or as special presentation items but others are known to exist elsewhere. The boxes are well made and the medals neatly inserted; it would be good to know more about them. HEXAB2044 | ||||||||
