Canon Savage was the Rector when the quire and chancel were re-ordered and the nave rebuilt. Though still Rector he served overseas during the Great War, and later became Rector of St Bartholomew's in London, the great Romanesque church much used for mediæval interiors for films from Beckett to Wolf Hall.

Canon Savage was the driving force at the Abbey when the quire and chancel were re-ordered and the nave rebuilt. Though Rector throughout the Great War, he was frequently abroad serving with the YMCA in France and later on behalf of the Serbian Red Cross. His final, hurried departure from Hexham just after the Armistice was to take up an appointment as British Representative on a Serbian Government war reparations commission. He later became Rector of St Bartholomew's in London.
Photograph of [then] unlocated painting. HEXAB3030
Monochrome photograph of a painted portrait of ESS in gloomy ecclesiastical interior holding Bible [or Prayer Book?] and academic hat. Decorations plus. Characterful.
The original painting was by Frank Ernest Beresford [1881–1967]; suspended by the white & blue ribbon is the Order of St Sava; below that is a two-sided Serbian Icon Cross.
Mounted and framed after 1919, presumably could be 1920s; frame 1960s?

The portrait, which was framed, was 5′ 6″ high and 3′ 8″ wide. – The Chairman said he would wait a day or two for suggestions, otherwise he would write to Mrs Beckingham offering to store it for her.”
PCC Min. 5/1/1971: “Portrait – Canon Savage – The Rector reported that a nephew of Mrs Beckingham had expressed his wish to have the portrait.”
pre-2015 in Parish Centre 1st floor west E wall.
Oct 2022: Confirmed that the original painted portrait is in the possession of Mrs Beckingham's nephew, who has kindly provided the colour photograph and a note from [Elfleda] Bride Savage [Mrs Beckingham's sister]: “Cross always worn by my father Canon E S Savage & given by Archbishop of Serbia for his work in that country during 1914–18 war.”
