North Chancel Ambulatory screen west of St Wilfrid's Chapel
screen | furniture
wood | metal
In three sections:— North screen: 5 glass panels and one wooden at N end, framed with projecting uprights on both faces. Panels 1 and 3 from south have added iron decorative railings: each of 3 uprights, the central one full height with cross in circle just above the flanking uprights which reach to half height.
South Screen: similar to N but of only 4 glass panels plus one wooden at S end and metalwork on N panel only. Asymmetry of screens to allow for central doorway to be centred on aisle E window and chapel altar. Its frame (with hollowed faces) rises higher than the screens with its uprights projecting. The door has one metalwork decoration to match those on screens so that when the door is closed, the four metal elaborations are approx. symmetrical though the door is off-centre of the screen – a curious arrangement.
