Mothers' Union altar frontal
frontal | textile
fabric
white
White background. Machine applied & stuffed flowers & leaves. The symbols on the Frontal are, from left to right:— The Star of Bethlehem Flower – a symbol of Incarnation – Jesus born of the Virgin Mary. The Starburst on a dark background – a symbol of the light of Christ shining in the darkness. The Lilies – symbols of the purity of the Virgin Mary, reminding us that the light of Christ shines through his Son. The Cyclamen – a symbol of the bleeding heart of Mary. It reminds us of her sufferings especially at the crucifixion of her Son. This reminder of suffering is also a link to the fact that this Altar was given in memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War (1914–1918).
Artist: Leonard Evetts 1909–1997 MA ARCA HM M.Sc. D.Litt (Lambeth)

Completed in the last year of Evetts' life – at the same time [to show the wide range of his skills] as the huge inscription with giant lettering at Albemarle barracks, and stained-glass windows at Craster, St Peter's and Bishop Wearmouth, St Nicholas's, and altar cloths, palls, and stoles. Commemorative stone at Royal Quay, North Shields.
Mr Jackson had it made in memory of his wife Doris – of Mothers' Union. See description in Mothers' Union booklet. Mentioned in Evetts' book [HEXAB5085].
