School Visits

Hexham Abbey’s beauty, history and atmosphere make it a unique and exciting place to bring your group of children or young people. We pride ourselves on offering first class education visits, and place great emphasis on fun and enjoyment for everyone.

Our Educational Activities

We offer an exciting range of half and whole day visits for schoolchildren, with a number of engaging, hands-on activities led by the Education Team. You can even create your own ‘tailor-made’ visit by choosing from our extensive and diverse list of workshops.

Our activities include a number of set themes that support Key Stage-appropriate learning in RE and History, as well as cross-curricular elements such as Art, Literacy and Spirituality. We can also work with groups to support visits on a particular topic or subject. Past examples have included a WW2 Evacuees visit, and a cross-curricular creative day devoted to the idea of sanctuary.

If you prefer to, you are welcome to bring your group on an informal visit, and lead your own activities. We invite a donaion of £1 per pupil for ‘pop in’ visits, and can lend you clipboards and other items of equipment. As the Abbey can get very busy, and access is occasionally restricted because of services, please book your visit in advance, to avoid disappointment.

Hexham is a vibrant town, with lots of other learning and leisure opportunities that children can enjoy. If you'd like to extend your visit to Hexham, see Explore Hexham for some suggestions.

Children With Additional Needs

Our relaxed and flexible approach makes the Abbey a great place to bring children and young people with additional needs, and they are always very welcome. We regularly organise visits by groups from special schools, and work in partnership with school staff to ensure we meet your every need.

What Our Visitors Say

We work hard to send our visitors home happy. Here are some of the comments we've received:

The class were completely enthralled with everything they were shown and did… I was not expecting such levels of engagement, and their response was amazing.

The programme you arranged was excellent – a variety of activities all pitched at the right level and some thought-provoking explanations and discussion.

This was a very special day the children will remember for a very long time… Your assistants were fantastic; they were so good with the children and their enthusiasm was catching.

My favourite of the day was the Night Stairs because I like the wibble wobble bits.

Going down the crypt was amazing. I couldn’t stop telling my dad about it when he got home.
