“The Rector laid before the Meeting a drawing of a Tablet proposed to be erected in the Abbey to place on record all the work carried out during the last ten years on repairs, restorations, & Nave completion. The Plan, drawn by Mr C C Hodges, was favourably considered, and was referred to for approval. Mr Ellis expressed his opinion that as the estimated cost of the tablet was £50 he thought it would be well if this expenditure could have the sanction of the members of the Congregation. The Rector thought he might have an opportunity of mentioning the matter at the Easter Vestry Meeting, to be held on Wednesday next.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 09/04/1909]
“At the last Easter Vestry Canon Savage said there was a great change in the churchwardens, and it seemed only reasonable, seeing they had been associated not only with the recent important work, but for a long spell of years, with an important period of the history of the Abbey, that some permanent record should be made, in recognition of their services. He was glad to say that the new churchwardens were strongly in favour of the proposal, and a Saxon design by Mr Hodges was submitted. It would be placed on the wall of the Nave.” [Hex.Par.Mag. Jul 1909]
“The question of erecting in the Abbey at an estimated cost of £50, the Tablet referred to in the minutes of meeting held on April 9th last, was further considered, and a resolution proposed by Mr Walker & seconded by Mr Fairlam, authorizing the Rector & Mr J A Jackson to arrange to get the work carried out, when funds are available, was agreed to.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 24/05/1909]
“It was agreed that the proposed mural tablet setting forth the improvements & additions to Hexham Abbey during the last 20 years, and the erection of Parochial Buildings (the Abbey Institute) be proceeded with. The Rector intimated that a fund was on hand for this purpose. The faculty having previously been obtained.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 03/05/1917]
“It was resolved to instruct Mr John Civil to proceed with the Mural Tablet and erect it in the Nave between the south and West doors.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 18/11/1917]
“The Rector wished it to be recorded that he expressed his regret that any action of his regarding the fixing of the Mural Tablet had appeared to show any want of respect to the wishes of the Wardens. and hoped that any future action in this matter would be amicably agreed upon. Proposed by Mr G Ross seconded by Mr Thew, that, as no faculty had been granted for the fixing of the tablet above referred to, the resolution that Mr Civil be instructed to fix it in the Nave be rescinded. This was agreed to.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 26/07/1918]
“The fixing of the Mural Tablet setting out the various works of restoration carried out at the Abbey was considered, and agreed to be deferred for the present.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 04/01/1921]
“It was decided that a Faculty be applied for immediately, and that the Tablet be placed on the West wall of the Nave aisle.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 11/02/1921]
“The faculty for the erection of this tablet having been received, it was resolved that Mr Civil be instructed to proceed with the work.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 06/06/1921]
“There being a considerable diversity of opinion as to the method by which the tablet should be fixed, it was resolved to ask Mr W H Wood, Architect of Newcastle on Tyne to advise and report.” [Churchwardens' Minutes 04/07/1921]
“Canon Savage Mural Tablet: It was agreed that the unveiling and dedication ceremony of this tablet be performed by the Rector at Morning Service on Sunday the 18th inst.” [Churchwardens' Minutes HEXAB5086 05/09/1921]
