Top part of wall plaque in memory of Revd Thomas Andrewes & the Clarke family

Casket-shaped white marble on grey (?) slate obelisk shape, with painted oval medallion of arms. Capitals throughout.
[from Wright 1823 p.95]:— On the west side of the north transept is a noble monument,— A pyramid of variegated marble; a small medallion of the same is suspended from the centre by a white marble ribband with a rosette, and is charged with a shield; gules, a cross saltier azure, edged or;— crest, a Moor's head proper. Beneath is an elegant shrine of white marble placed on a tabular pedestal (divided into two folios) of the same beautiful material. On the shrine is the following inscription:—

See HEXAB1024.2 whose wording suggests that this item was previously “ABOVE” it, when first installed. An 1899 guidebook [HEXAB5238.4] has a photograph on p.9 showing the whole tablet above HEXAB1036 when both were fixed to the wall closing the arch which now leads to the nave north aisle; the tablet was moved and divided when the wall was taken down for building the nave in 1908.
Robert was a younger brother of Thomas.
1737: Licence to Thomas Andrews, Lecturer of Hexham, and his family, while inhabiting in the parish of Hexham, to use as a burying place an ancient stone vault scituate in the west part of the churchyard of Hexham, at the west side or west end of the tower near to the great new buttress in the north, and lesser buttress on the south, and the said tower on the west, to that part of the churchyard which is not now made use of to bury in, about 10 feet underground, 13 feet in length, and 7 feet in breadth.
[Wright 1823 p.97]:— The family vault is beneath, entered from the churchyard. Above is a large well-painted escutcheon bearing the whole arms.
[Wright 1823 p.234]:— “Robert Andrewes, Esq. gave 50s. a year to the poor of this parish;”

Double tablet, white marble on grey slate base, black key-pattern frieze. Roman caps and Italics, and odd punctuation in common. Small painted shields at foot of each.
[from Wright 1823 p.96–97]:— Beneath [the left folio] on a medallion, a small shield; argent, in chief a small star for difference, on a bend dexter gules between three pellets sable, three white swans, proper. Over all an escutcheon—gules, a cross saltire, acure, edged, or. crest, a white swan, proper, holding a pellet, sable.
[Beneath the right folio] Shield, quarterly 1st and 4th argent, 3 pellets sable, bend dexter, gules, charged with 3 white swans, marchant, proper. 2nd and 3d gules or, cross saltire, azure, edged, or. Over all an escutcheon gules, a bend dexter, argent 3 stars of 5 points sable. Crest, a white swan proper, holding a pellet sable. This is a most elegant monument, by Davies of Newcastle.

There are four Clarke tombstones (HEXAB1058, HEXAB1059, HEXAB1060, HEXAB1061) in the crypt, and three Clarke hatchments (HEXAB3059, HEXAB3060, HEXAB3061) on the south wall of the Nave.
1823: A B Wright dedicated his “… History of Hexham …” to the Rev. Robert Clarke, A.M.

[Wright 1823 p.234]:— “the Rev. Sloughter Clarke and his wife, daughter of R Andrewes, Esq., since his death have given a grant of a rent-charge of 50s. out of a close of £6 a year, near the Maiden Cross, to Robert Salmon, Gent. and Edward Charlton, mercer, and their heirs, in trust, and upon condition that they shall truly pay the said sum of 50s. yearly to the minister of Hexham, by him to be distributed to the poor of the township.”
