Font Canopy Suspension System
suspension | metalwork
metal
A series of iron rods joined to each other by their terminal hooks, secured through roof truss over the font. The canopy [HEXAB103] was made, using old woodwork found in the Abbey by Josephus Ceulemans, a Flemish refugee from Gt. War then living in Hexham. The design was by C C Hodges who put together, restored and completed the old canopy, which had been broken up but had fortunately escaped destruction! All Hodge's description refers to the woodwork, but the woodwork, simple as it is, would have been installed at the same time.
