The Northern Saints Trail - The Way of Light

The Abbey is pleased to have been noted as a venue of significance on the Northern Saints Trail, The Way of Light. On the morning of Thursday 20th May, The Bishops of both Durham and Newcastle will stop off at the Abbey for brunch whilst travelling the ancient pilgrimage route before continuing on towards Durham Cathedral.

The six Northern Saints Trails are based on ancient pilgrimage routes and portray the region’s Saints and their stories, set against a backdrop of the very best the North East has to offer. 

The six trails include:

The Way of Light

Heavenfield/Hexham to Durham
Distance 45 miles or 72 kilometres

The Way of Life

Gainford to Durham
Distance 29 miles or 47 kilometres

The Way of Love 

Durham to Hartlepool.
Distance 28 miles or 45.5 kilometres

The Way of Learning

Jarrow to Durham
Distance 38 miles or 61 kilometres 

The Angel's Way

Seaton Sluice to Chester le Street
Distance 30 miles or 48 kilometres

The Way of the Sea

Warkworth to North Shields
Distance 38 miles or 61 kilometres

 

All trails are routed in the region's Christian heritage but everyone is welcome to embark on a pilgrimmage for whatever reason they find to do so.
