Funerals

For many generations, Hexham Abbey has helped people mark the end of life. The funeral service gives thanks for the unique person who has died, entrusts them to God and enables those gathered to offer their love, support and prayers to one another and those most deeply bereaved.

When someone dies, it can be totally devastating and yet there is also so much to think about and to organise. Hexham Abbey and its team of clergy are here to support you in your sadness and to help you plan a funeral service.

Please contact us if you would like to arrange a funeral for a loved one. Whether you have lots of ideas and plans or whether you are quite uncertain, the member of the Abbey Clergy who will be conducting the service will be ready to listen to you, to guide you and to help you choose suitable readings, hymns and prayers. Especially if they did not know your loved one well, they will also want to talk with you in order to build up a picture of the person’s life.

You might find the website about Church of England funerals helpful.

If you would like to organise a funeral tea after the service, we can also offer catering, and a choice of several lovely function rooms.

We are not just here to assist you in the days before the funeral; we shall still be there to talk to at any time afterwards, if you feel this will help you in dealing with your loss.

Every year, around 2nd November (All Souls' Day), we invite next of kin and their friends and family to a service in which the names are read out of all people for whom we have taken funerals in the past year. There is an opportunity in the service to light a candle in memory of the person who has died.
