Great East Window – Alexander, Bell, Ellis, Hyslop Memorial Window

“St Andrew's Call” and “History of Christianity at Hexham”
The six large lights are divided into nine figure panels, set in a ground of quarries painted in grisaille and decorated with a foliated design of early English character. The decorative scheme consists of deep coloured pictures relieved upon a white ground to which they are united by the lines of varied greens and browns made by stems and foliage; with here and there a brilliant note of red made by clusters of berries.
The tone of colour selected is low and rich rather than bright. The figures are about life-size; a scale which is not by any means too large to suit the architectural scale of the Abbey Church.
The three upper lights are devoted to The Calling of St Andrew, the great Missionary Apostle, and the patron of a church itself the result of missionary enterprise.
The three lower lights have Christ as the prominent Figure and show three episodes in the history of Hexham Abbey. These scenes, illustrative of the progress of Christianity at Hexham, lead up to three large figures of Christ.
In the bottom right corner of each of the three upper lights is “H.T.BOSDET 1905”
In the bottom right corner of the lower right light: “THESE WINDOWS WERE DESIGNED & EXECUTED | BY H.T.BOSDET. OF INGLEWOOD STUDIO | GROVE PARK TERRACE CHISWICK, LONDON. 1905”

All six windows were dedicated on July 23rd 1905 by the Venerable Archdeacon Madden, Canon Savage's predecessor at Barrow.
The windows are memorials to different individuals. The three upper lights are in memory of William and Jane ELLIS, erected by their son Thomas and his sisters Emma and Mrs. Ann McComb. The left light of the lower tier was erected by Mrs. Ann Hyslop in memory of her husband John HYSLOP and their son Andrew. The centre light is to the memory of George Hogarth BELL, erected by his widow Katharine and his brother Henry. The right light, in memory of William and Elizabeth ALEXANDER and their daughter Dorothy, was erected by their sons Joseph, William and Uttrick, and their daughter Mrs. Jane Elizabeth Jameson.
“In affectionate remembrance of William ELLIS who d. 5 Apr. 1882 aged 77 yrs. Also of Anne his wife who d. 20 Apr. 1888 aged 83 yrs. Also of their daughter Emma who d. 29 July 1920 in her 76th yr. Also of their only son Thomas who d. 13 Aug. 1920 in his 74th yr.” [Inscription at cemetery 22/4]

On the left hand He is portrayed as “I am the Light of the World” [John 8:12]; below this is a group of Romans represented as taking part in heathen sacrifices at the temple of Jupiter. We have several such altars as relics of the Roman occupation at Hexham. The priest stands in front of the picture and brandishes over the victim the sacrificial knife. The worshippers kneel before him. In the background a figure of Jupiter. A thunderstorm breaks over the scene and suggests the impending cataclysm which is to sweep away Roman idolatry. The idea is Christ the Light drawing the heathen to Himself. The text “And the idols He shall | utterly ✤abolish” [Isa. 2:18] lends further to this idea.

St Wilfrid is also depicted in two painted panels: HEXAB133.7 & HEXAB202.3 (& possibly HEXAB3068.1), and in other windows: HEXAB1406, HEXAB1417, HEXAB1427, HEXAB1431.3 (twice) & HEXAB1431.4
Etheldreda is also depicted in a painted panel HEXAB133.25, and in other windows: HEXAB1427 (thrice) and HEXAB1431.4 (twice)
The central window above the Holy Table [when that was against the east wall] represents the Christ as “I am The Bread of Life” [John 6:35]. Below is represented Queen Etheldreda, the Foundress of the Abbey, inspecting with St Wilfrid the plans of the Abbey she is building at Hexham. A kneeling page exhibits the plan which the architect is explaining; while, behind, Italian masons are working at the fabric on a scaffolding. The idea is, the building of the Church leading to Christ as the Living Bread and the Head of the Church. The inscription reads: Build ye the Sanctuary | of the LORD GOD [1 Chr. 22:19].

St Cuthbert is also depicted in two painted panels: HEXAB133.1 & HEXAB202.7, and twice in another window: HEXAB1431.5
The window on the right portrays the figure of Christ as “I am the Good Shepherd” [John 10:14]. Below, St Cuthbert, a Bishop of Hexham, is represented as confirming the young people of Northumbria; of whom a biographer writes over 1,200 years ago: “St Cuthbert used to go round in his Diocese bountifully distributing counsels of salvation, as well as laying his hands on the newly baptized that they might receive the grace of the Holy Spirit.” A thane kneels before the Saint and his followers gather round for the Laying on of Hands. The idea is that of good Shepherding the young by the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese. The inscription reads: “Exhorted the Brethren | and confirmed them” [Acts 15:32].
