1964: Death of Lilian Hawthorn age 84 registered 1Q1964 [Northumberland West, 1b p490]
1964. “Miss Lilian Hawthorn. … It was she who, as an Art student, made the enamel centre piece for the cross [HEXAB2085] on the High Altar. … When in 1939 she came to live in Hexham, she took a very active part in the life of the Abbey, and undertook the care of all the Altar linen and brasses, and organized the distribution of the Parish Magazine, and trained the Sunday School teachers. … Holy Burial Feb.8.” [Abbey Chronicle, Apr p2 & 4]
1965. “We are greatly indebted to Miss [Clementine Mary] Hawthorn for giving to the Abbey, in memory of her sister Miss Lilian Hawthorn, a Communion Rail for the north side of the Lady Altar in the North Transept. It has been beautifully made to match the Rail which is already in use; and makes it possible now for us to use the north side of the Altar, on Thursday mornings, without carrying a separate rail across from the Nave Altar. It is a worthy and most useful memorial gift!” [Abbey Chron. Apr p3]
Lilian Hawthorn's older sister, Miss Frances A Hawthorn, is commemorated by the inscription on kneeler-front [HEXAB161.1]. Her younger sister, Miss Clementine Mary Hawthorn (b.22Sep1881), died in the War Memorial Hospital, 28Dec1973, aged 92.
