Hatchment of Martha Clarke d.1814
hatchment | flat art
oil on canvas
The white background on the dexter (left-hand) side shows that her husband survived her. Her arms were identical to her husband's but, because she was a woman, the crest was omitted and three cherubs were placed above the shield.
Arms: Quarterly 1st and 4th argent on a bend gules between three roundels sable three swans marchant proper [for Clarke]; 2nd and 3rd gules saltire or surmounted by another vert [for Andrewes]; on an escutcheon in pretence gules on a bend argent three molets azure [for Shafto].
Unframed hatchment for Martha Clarke, (d.1814 aged 28; buried in the Crypt [HEXAB1059]), wife of Robert Clarke above and daughter of Charles Shaftoe of Carrycoats by his second wife. Her memorial tablet [HEXAB1024.2] on the west wall of the north transept bears the same arms.
